OIL ON CANVAS ATTRIBUTED TO OTTO VAN VEEN WITH ORNAMENTAL FRAME
$8,600.00
Oil on canvas attributed to the studio of Otto van Veen in an ornamental frame.
In 1613, the Dutch parliament commissioned the Flemish artist Otto van Veen (1556-1629) to paint twelve panels illustrating the 69 AD revolt of the Batavians against the Romans. The twelve panels of the original series are now in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This painting, a studio replica, shows Julius Civilis, leader of the Batavians, beginning negotiations with the Roman general Cerialis to end the war.
